Pete Mitchell crosses paths with the Bat-family at the time (Bruce, Dick and Jason) between the timeline of Top Gun and Top Gun Maverick and slowly actually becomes part of the group. So in this AU, Pete is the one who sacrifices himself for Jason (they were both taken) and becomes the Red Hood in place.
